DDR - Simson

And finally I write about my motorbike.

Of course it isn't a new one, it's from '88, almost the same age as me.

Unfortunately I don't have picure of mine, 'cause I didn't take pics to my laptop from home, but there are lots of nice bikes in the Simson Klub Hungary's site, this one looks nearly the same.

The name of the model is exactly Simson S51, it has a 50ccm two-stroke engine what has 3,7 HP and 5Nm torque. It's not too much, but enough for a small bike like this (80kg), the maximum speed is about 70 km/h - but there are lots of tuned machines about 8-10 HP, what can make a surprise for other scooters :)

This is the most famous Simson, the Schwalbe.

DDR - Trabant

Till now, I was mostly writing about fast and sporty cars, but this time not!

In Eastern Germany, during the socialism, a lot of car were made, which are mostly unknown for people from "The West", I would like to introduce theese great cars, starting with Trabant

A few years ago tousands of Trabants were on the streets, but nowdays mostly vintage car collectors have them. It was made with two-stroke engine, this gives the unmistakeable sound.

There was of course rally version too

It's a very popular car in Hungary as well, in every year there is a rally between Budapest and Bamako, and there are people, who go with Trabi

It's a good fun to go Trabant Club meetings, we can see a lot of interesting "pimped out" automobile :)

The BMW E24 series started in 1976

All the people I know are saying that this was the most beautiful BMW cupe, I have to say that I absolutely agree with them.

Production started in March 1976 with two models: the 630CS and 633CSi. Originally the bodies were manufactured by Karmann, but production was later taken in-house to BMW.

In Europe, 1984 saw the introduction of the M635CSi, essentially an E24 powered by the powerplant of the BMW M1 (the M88, now putting out 286 PS (282 hp/210 kW)). 16" BBS 3 piece wheels and a deeper air dam completed the package. Most M635csi's were equipped with 415 mm Metric Wheels requiring Michelin TRX tires.

In the end of the '60's, Opel decided to make a car, what is sporty but cheap, so not just the rich people can buy it. This was the Manta, releashed in 1970

The most popular was the GT/E series, it had a 1,9 litre engine with 105 horsepower. This may sound funny, but in theese years if a car could go more than 160 km/h, it was a sportscar!

The Irmscher company made some tuning kits, theese made the Manta look more sporty

In the summer of '75 they refreshed the model, it was the Manta-B.

This car had also a rally version, it was the Manta 400.

Let's continue watching theese beauty- and powerful cars with the Lancia Delta S4

The history is very similar to the Peugeot 205 T16: it is also based on a stock car, but just the body looks like the normal Delta.

The "normal" Delta

The S4 took full advantage of the Group B regulations. It featured a mid-mounted engine and all wheel drive for superior traction and handling. The car's 1759 cc four cylinder engine combined supercharging and turbocharging to reduce turbo lag at low RPM. Officially the car produced 550 horsepower (410 kW). Unofficial figures claimed the S4 could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h on gravel in just 2.3 seconds.

Like Peugeot's earlier 205 T16, the mid-engine Lancia Delta S4 was a Delta in name and body styling only (for marketing purposes), and shared virtually nothing in terms of construction with the production front-engine Delta.

The bodywork was made of a carbon fibre composite with front and rear bodywork fully detachable for fast replacement due to accident damage and ease of access during on-event servicing.The bodywork featured several aerodynamic aids including bonnet opening behind the front mounted water radiator with Gurney flap, front splitter and winglets molded into the front bumper panel, flexible front skirt, and rear deck lid wing that featured both a full aerofoil wind section twinned with a deflection spoiler.

First of all, I have to explain you what is a youngtimer. It's not an official name, it comes from the word oldtimer (vintage car), but in practice we call every car a youngtimer, what was made after the '60's and has mostly original components.

I like older cars very much, that's why I've chosen this topic, and I'm gonna introduce my favorite ones.

Let's start with the Peugeot 205 T16

This is not similar as the normal Peugeot 205, what was a popular small car, 5,3 million was made and it was in market from 1983 to 1998.

The T16 series were much more interesting, theese were the rally editions. In theese years Peugeot was racing in the famous Group B, and there was a rule that most motorsport events using street-based cars require that the manufacturer release a minimum number of public street models.

As you can see in the images, theese were not common cars, just an "object that looks like an automobile".

The road variants shared the transverse mid-engine, four-wheel drive layout of the rally car, but had much less power, at around 200 PS (The real rally versions had more than 400 PS). The T was for Turbo; the 16 for the 16 valves that the 4-cylinder 1.8 litre engine had.
